Actinomma leptoderma longispina Cortese and Bjørklund, 1998

Description - Add description

The new subspecies differs from Actinomma l. leptoderma only by the presence of very long and characteristic, curved radial spines outside the third shell.

The outer, third cortical shell: The outer third shell is quite similar to that of A. l. leptoderma, but differs in two respects. At one side of the shell there seems to be an open area resembling a pylome. About 3-5 three-bladed curved, radial spines, up to twice the diameter of the third shell.

The rest of the radial spines emerge from the second medullary shell and have about the same length and thickness both inside and outside the third cortical shell, as in A. l. leptoderma. They extend beyond the third shell to approximately the same distance as that between the second and third shell. The pores are approximately circular, ranging in size between 6 and 18µm.

The second, medullary shell: In all respects similar to A. l. leptoderma.

The first, medullary shell: In all respects similar to A. l. leptoderma.
