Improvements for Radiolaria.org |
|
At the Interrad 2000 meeting we got some suggestions for improvements for Radiolaria.org:
- Develop the discussion feature more, including the ability to add pictures to the discussion. This will be helpful in cases where someone wonders “What species is this?”
- Batch insert possibility, making it possible to submit large amounts of information in one go, not having to copy paste one species at a time.
- Batch output possibility, making it possible to select a large data set from the radiolaria database and download this as a text file for further local processing.
- The integration of the “Radfolks” mailing list into Radiolaria.org, generating e-mails at certain events.
- The introduction of a “Mystery radiolarian of the month” feature, where an image of a newly discovered radiolarian is posted. All radiolarian researchers can then post their opinions and suggestions if this is a new species or an already described one. The posting of a new “Mystery radiolarian of the month” will typically be an event that triggers the posting of an e-mail to Radfolks.
- Under each species we will include sample locations (station, latitude, longitude, sample method, author) where this species has been recorded. Mostly used for studies on recent radiolarians?
- Tagging some of the information (e.g. distribution) with the name of the contributing researcher.
- Renaming the “Synonyms” section.
- Improving the registration of “References” on Radiolaria.org. Enable the selection of an already existing reference instead of having to re-post references for each species. If the reference is not already in the system it will be possible to add a new one.
- The creation of a section for old radiolarian literature, that have been scanned and cleaned and made available on .gif/.jpeg format.
- Establish mirror sites around the world (with one master site where new information is added to the database).
