Comments: Internal skeleton consists of bars M, D, V, A, Ai, LI, Lr, 11, lr. Hi. In, spine Ax and arches A-Ll, A-Lr, V-Ll, V-Lr, ll-Ll, lr-Lr. 11-lr (text-fig. 4; pi. 6, fig. 8). Ax reduced to a node. M relatively short, lies below "ring" formed by arches V-Ll, V-Lr. ll-Ll. lr-Lr and 11-lr. A extends freely upward from M to top of cephalis and extends outside as apical horn (see above). D very thin, extends downward at angle to wall of thorax and protrudes as small dorsal wing from upper thorax. LI and Lr extend upward at slight angle to arches then become very thin and continue at slight angle downward to thoracic wall where they protrude as small wings on upper thorax. V very thin, extends upward at angle to join V-Ll and V-Lr and continues to collar stricture where it protrudes as small, bladed vertical horn, usually hidden within spongy thorax. Bars 11 and lr extend upward at slight angle to arches then become very thin and continue downward at slight angle to thorax but do not penetrate shell wall. Ai branches from A. extending to shell wall but not penetrating. From approximately same point A-Ll and A-Lr extend outward then downward to join LI and Lr respectively. Bars Hi and In extend to j o in cephalic wall and do not penetrate. Arches V-Ll. V-Lr. ll-Ll. lr-Lr and 11-lr form an irregular "ring" which is joined to shell wall by the thin extensions of D. LI and Lr and numerous thin bars which extend laterally from arches. |
